Hi all! Great podcast, I'm a sucker for all things Halloween so this was a blast to listen to. I went down to Anaheim for a combo DCA Trick-or-Treat /
CHOCwalk / Knott's Scary Farm trip a couple of weeks ago. Behold our DCA Trick-or-Treat costumes!
Sorry for the blur factor, we were having issues with night shots on our point-n-shoot camera. Still, I heard Jeff's idea for a costume and had to share. Gotta give us props for hauling down a tuxedo jacket and a parasol in our carry-on luggage. Those who recognized what we were dressed as loved it, including one cast member (who shall remain nameless to avoid their manager's wrath) who supplied me a barrel to stand on over at the Blue Sky exhibit for my newest avatar pic, and a group of three folks donning incredible Tim Burton-style Alice in Wonderland homemade costumes. Had a blast at the CHOC walk too, and raised a couple of hundred bucks for a good cause while getting photo ops with characters and being able to walk through some backstage areas. Highly recommended for anyone in the park next October who wants to do some charity on their Disneyland visit. Lastly, the chance sighting of Dave and Becky at Toy Story Mania added a whole new level of goodness to an already fun trip. Nice to see you both (if only for a moment or two)! |

Those costumes are great! We used to have our annual Ad-Lib Attractions Halloween party in the Mansion itself, and the last year it was held there I went as
the attic bride (pre-Constance). That was scary on many levels!
I have been looking forward to this week's show for a while now, waiting for the Mousetalgia's take on HalloweenTime. I have been to the parks weekly and have enjoyed the Halloween offerings so much that I am not ready for it to end this Sunday. I give it an overall good effort and am hoping for more and better next year. Ghost Galaxy, in particular, was a fun novelty, but it was missing something. I took my friend on it for his first time last Thursday, and we both concluded that it could use a story. Sure, Space Mountain itself does not have a definite story beyond space travel. But, Ghost Galaxy introduced us to a new character. Who or what is it? Where did it come from, and why is it tormenting us? I think this goes along with Jeff's comments about the queue needing something to unsettle us as we wait. Ever been through a Universal haunted house lately? At least in Florida, Universal goes to great lengths to tell the story in detail before one ever enters the maze. I expect Disney could do the same, only much better and in more creative ways. Haunted Mansion Holiday grows on me more and more each time I ride it. Whereas the first time I was disappointed because all of my attention was on the new additions that I missed the old scenes, now I see the classic elements peeking through a bit more. Can someone explain the loading area? That is where I am mostly disappointed. The character collage is gratiutous and out of place, in my opinion, and is too reminiscent of a Fantasyland ride loading area. The most anticipated Halloween attraction for me was the fireworks. I have seen the show in Florida numerous times and somewhat knew what to expect, especially with the soundtrack. I am with Kristen in not liking the arrangements. The whole thing could do with much less percussion. The Hellfire sequence was my favorite, but the Poor Unfortunate Souls was awful. However, the show itself was very impressive. I am so jealous that WDW could not pull off Zero's flying effect (we used to have Witch Hazel flying down from Cinderella Castle, but not anymore). The balloon with the projections added a lot to the show, too. I loved the image of the full moon behind the green castle. Very spooky! While the 360-degree fireworks of HalloWishes is amazing, I like Disneyland's Halloween Screams better overall. I have noticed that the streets of Disneyland are very crowded at night. What was it like when the Main Street Electrical Parade used to go down Main Street? I ask because I think the best part of WDW's Halloween event is the parade, including the appearance of the Headless Horseman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukWPyHAVP20&feature=related). It would be a great addition to next year's Disneyland HalloweenTime. |

wow awesome costumes!! I love this episode. I really wish that now we could ride the original during halloween but I love the NBC version so I don't really mind. Wish I could have seen the halloween fireworks too. I have seen them online and the only part I have a problem with musically is the Oogie Boogie section. I think they ruined the original song! Have a quick little story that Kat reminded me of while listening to the interview, which was great by the way! I don't like the sensation of falling, so I had never been on the Tower of Terror before. So this last trip in September I decided that I should at least try it. I went through the area with the video and was told to go up the stairs in the boiling room. I stopped at the top of the stairs to read the sign by the little room when I began to hear a little girl cry. Being already scared, this only intensified my panic. So great work Kat on sounding like a small little girl asking for her mom from the 4th demention.

Von Baroketch wrote: That's what it looks like! I've been trying to place it. It's a fun Scary Christmas "card," as they call it, and it fills up the "limbo" space, but it takes you out of the story and out of the Mansion itself. |

Not to brag, but not only is my name on the list in the attic of the Haunted Mansion Holiday, but it's on there twice! Once it even says, "Timmy
B." They even threw in my last initial. They MUST be referring to me, right? ...what? Who's Tim Burton? ...D'OH!!!
On a side note, if any of you are Bay Area (California) folk you should check out my friend's Haunted Mansion Holiday Walk-Through Tribute he does every Halloween. It's in Redwood City, CA on Topaz street on Halloween night . I even included it in a recent Kingdom Comedy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f3IsOyXq4c

Oh, hey, Tim. Great segment on this episode! I laughed out loud.
I loved the Kat Cressida interview and the Mousetalgia review of HalloweenTime. It seems like a totally different dynamic than WDW since it's not a hard-ticket event, right? And all the overlays. At least you can go through a haunted house on Halloween at WDW or DLP. I hear that they take Halloween really seriously in China. Hong Kong has to face a lot of competition, so they have total haunts in HKDL. Demon Jungle in Adventureland, Main Street Haunted Hotel on Main St, and Alien Invasion in Tomorrowland. I guess they must not have had enough room to put one in Fantasyland, right? ;) But I did hear that the DL Ghost Galaxy is actually building upon HKDL's. DL's has something like 10 more effects. Great episode! |

Forgot to mention that we watched the fireworks once at the castle and once at Small World. They do a really nice job with Small World's location, using
the entire face of the facade much like they do at Christmas time. The circular clock acts as a projection location for Jack and while you can't see the
fireworks launched from the castle you are still closer to the main fireworks so that kinda makes up for it.
Also just read online that they're adding another viewing site this week over at the Fantasmic location, using the mist screens as a projection surface. Cool! On an unrelated note, here's a better pic of our costumes with the Alice crew:

@Von Baroketch, I agree with your (and Kristen's) points about both Ghost Galaxy and the fireworks score. Galaxy had great ambience outside but it all
disappeared once inside the queue. I'm thinking this may have been in part that (from what I read) they only got the greenlight on the project about two
months before it opened, so this was a quick-and-dirty job to say the least. With the response they've seen this year hopefully they'll have more time
to flesh it out next year months in advance and do something within the loading queue. Heck, just changing the soundtrack from the standard Space Mountain chat
to a more spooky tone would do wonders. Dimming the lights or changing the gels to something more moody would help a ton too.
Regarding the fireworks score, it seems to suffer the same issues that plague most Disney parades and shows nowadays. It's all sort of generic perky disco themes and tween anthems and not so much attention to unique composition and arrangement. I doubt it will change anytime in the future as it's been the de-facto standard for the last decade or two. The last few parades have been pretty unbearable for me due to the music cues, and it bugs me because I know how much effort the entertainment crew is putting into the live performance but the music just irritates me. |

Sorry for not replying sooner.
I cannot say much about the Ghost Galaxy, since i've never seen it in person and most videos of it are just horrible. As for the fireworks, everything is great except the songs! Did you see what they did to poor "Grim Grinning Ghosts". :( And the HMH, well everybody knows my opinion on it, but I think I'll say it anyway. Take it out of the Haunted Mansion! Make it it's own attraction. Give the Haunted Mansion a holiday overlay that actually FITS it's style. Maybe a couple of nods to "A Christmas Carol". Ok, rant over. please continue on. |
