Walking through the gates of Frontierland, my one-track mind

belongs to Frontierland, its unifying power is unlike any other attraction in
the park. (Submarines, I’m looking at you.) As ridiculous as it might sound,
out of all the things I love about the Mark Twain, its ability to live in two

There's nothing quite as awkward as mistaking a real person for an audio animatronic.

It was our first night in Anaheim and we were kicking things off with a bang at the Haunted Mansion dinner. The lights dimmed and I was giddy with excitement
as I hurried to finish my crab cocktail before the program began. When I looked up, a very tall, polished looking man had appeared on the stage. (I'd
missed his entrance and was guessing he traveled in via platform from below the stage or maybe came in on some sort of track system.) However he got there, he
looked amazing! So tall, so life like, and completely worthy of the Imagineering Stamp of Approval.

At first, I was really impressed. His movements and overall appearance were quite life like. While his bald head picked up a bit of a glare, the texture of his
skin looked very realistic. (And really, you can't fault the Imagineers for a balding glare - it's a hazard in real life too.) His gestures were...

This awkward moment is brought to you by the letter "C" for Club 33. The Mousetalgia gang was given the chance to have lunch at Club 33 the day
before the Expo began. Never ones to pass up a chance to eat where Walt had only dreamed of dining, Jeff and I decided to give it a go. We briefly considered
our time line for the day - we had exactly 3 hours and 15 minutes to fly from San Jose, check in to our hotels and get to Club 33 by 12:15. This would be
followed by an afternoon of picking up our Haunted Mansion Merchandise (lines the previous day had reached a record length of 6 hours) changing for the evening
and being at the actual event by 5:00p.m. Whew!

As we savored the final moments of our Club 33 experience (as well as the last bites of the dessert buffet) time was definitely on our minds as we prepared to
pay the monstrous bill. Here's where the $1000 Awkward made its grand entrance. We had been sitting at a table of 10 and eight of those 10 diners...

For some, working at Disneyland is a dream come true. For others, its simply a painful means of survival. For the most part, the majority of Cast Members fall
somewhere in between these two extremes. It's on that rare occasion when you meet a CM who really detests their job. That's when things can get
awkward. Like the time I rode in the Lily Belle with the CM who before we had even left Main Street Station said, "I don't really like Disneyland, I

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Many hard-core Disney fans have experienced the sting of a raised eyebrow or mocking chuckle presented by a co-worker,
friend or family member at the mention of their love for Disney. A little black rain cloud of judgment is to be expected in the real world and for many, the
D23 Expo was just the umbrella of grace needed.

Spending a few days away with our own kind, it was supposed to be a safe house for pin lanyards, Goofy hats and any and everything Disney. For the truly pure
in heart, it was just the right time to break out beautifully homemade costumes paying homage to their Disney hero of choice…including one young man dressed up
as Pinocchio. Not Captain Jack Sparrow, not the Rocketeer, but Pinocchio.

Certain professions in life require an extra dose of persistence. While some would call persistence an admirable quality, it can also be a breeding ground for
awkward. Like the stink on an old potato you forgot was under the sink, the awkward grows at a slow but steady pace until one day, you just want to gag at its
overwhelming stench.

Old Potato Persistence - Telemarketers, door-to-door salesmen, and Ryan Seacreast have it mastered. The beautiful thing about OPP is that it consistently
produces the same four stages of reaction: Pity, Polite, Pretending (you can't hear them) and finally, Peter-Panned Off.

In order to prepare for the D23 Expo, Disney schooled their worker bees in the ins and outs of OPP. Each day of the Expo the D23 lackeys - or as I like to call
them, the Yellow Perils (notice the reference to the Haley Mills classic 'Summer Magic') stood ready to hand out a yellow card asking for your name and
information. With a fistful of tiny...

The line that was once as obvious as a barbed wire fence suddenly becomes as strong as a spider web in a tornado.

We all know people who have never even heard of this line. For the majority of Disney fans and society in general, there is a certain amount of restraint and
decorum most people are able to manage on a day-to-day basis. However, when this line is crossed - or in my case completely trampled and torched - Creepy
Stalker Awkward becomes the new reality.

I hadn't even made it inside the Expo on day one when my Creepy Stalker Awkward moment began. Jeff and I were hustling along to the front entrance of the
Convention Center when Jeff made the tragic mistake of saying "Hey, is that guy wearing a Mousetalgia tee shirt?"

As we peered through the glass, our eyes widened at the...

When you get in trouble and you don't know right from wrong - Jiminy Cricket Awkward.

The JCA is a very special kind of awkward, in that only you and an imaginary cricket are subjected to its agonizing pain and embarrassment. This type of
awkward doesn't involve an audience, which is pretty much its only redeeming quality. Once Jiminy takes a seat your shoulder, full on awkwardness starts to
run amuck.

On day one of the Expo, I hadn't been in the convention center for more than an hour or two when I had my first Jiminy Cricket Awkward moment. The center
was brimming with fun and excitement and included a myriad of Disney workers doing whatever it took to convince people to drink the Magic Kingdom Kool-Aid. In
the midst of the mayhem, Disney had set up a Voluntears area where Expo attendees could participate in activities that benefited the local community. As a
side note, I spelled...

One of my favorite kinds of awkward is the All Together Now Awkward. While awkward is usually a dis-unifying, jarring kind of moment, All Together Now Awkward
is an Aurora Borealis type of rare and beautiful moment. A phenomenon that unites those who are unlucky enough to witness someone digging their own grave of
foolishness.

If you've experienced it, you know exactly when I'm talking about; when someone does or says something that to one percent of the world is acceptable,
but to the other 99 percent of us is completely uncomfortable. (Before you envision me with stone in hand ready for hurling, I recognize that we all take a
trip to this one percent world now and then. This post is about how nice it is to be in the realm of the 99. My one percent moment will come in a later blog
or when you meet me in person - whichever comes first.)

Back to the expo - Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson had just completed a very funny and very interesting session about...

Its always awkward seeing someone get yelled at. It's doubly awkward when somehow you get involved. You know what I'm talking about - the Black Hole of
Awkwardness. You don't see it coming, you don't know how you got involved and you definitely don't know how to get out of it.

Jeff and I were standing in line for an autograph session when a Cast Member ended up closing the line which put Jeff and I as the last eligible autograph
seekers. A very angry woman sporting a Goofy sweatshirt, Voluntear Mouse ears and a fully loaded pin lanyard, was less than pleased when she arrived a few
moments later and the line was closed. Instead of moving on to another event, she decided to start a progression of heckling, yelling and eventually berating
at the CM who had closed the line. (On a side note, an outfit consisting of 80% Disney normally lends itself to a cheerful demeanor, but when things go wrong
for the wearer, watch out.)

With her Mickey ears...
